RETAIL: LUXURY & LEISURE
Apart from one small cap (Famous Brands), this sector comprises some of the largest companies on the JSE, Anheuser-Busch (ANH), Richemont (CFR) and British American Tobacco (BTI). These three are truly international companies, with operations across the globe. While Famous Brands and Richemont are luxury brands, Anheuser-Busch and British American Tobacco are both categorised in so-called ‘sin’ industries and often excluded from Responsible Investing portfolios.
INDUSTRY EXPOSURES
FarSight’s view is that because consumers across the world consume from every part of the economy, doing good is not defined by whether the company is in a good or bad industry, but whether the company is doing well for its shareholders over the long-term. We reason that in well-functioning markets, where society is able to vote its preferences, such companies will ultimately also do good by serving its customers to the ultimate benefit of society, for example by licensing speak-easies (in South Africa, these are called Shabeens) through a regulatory framework, some of the worst excesses in the industry can be curtailed, thus gradually reducing the negative impact on society.
